Certification Course
Whale Shark Encounters Whale sharks are often found feeding on the plankton blooms inside La Paz bay during the spring and fall. The use of a spotter plane greatly increases the chances of finding these gentle giants as they swim right underneath the surface and only occasionally cut the surface with their fins. Baja Quest charters a private small plane upon request of our divers. The plane pilot and a Baja Quest staff on the plane directs our boat to the exact location of the whale sharks.
This service is offered to a minimum of 5 divers (to cover the plane costs) and a maximum of 10 divers (to avoid stressing or harming of the whale shark). Scuba while whale sharks are feeding in the surface is prohibited and conduct guidelines while snorkeling are enforced. Research on the behaviour and ecology of whale sharks is undertaken by Baja Quest in collaboration with a shark conservation group (www.iemanya.org). Videos, photos and logged observations from our divers are appreciated. Notice: The use of spotter planes for whale shark encounters increases the chance of swimming with them but is not a guarantee.
