Spots Near La Paz
El
Bajo (The Seamount)
This
oasis of sea life is particularly famous for frequent sightings of
schools of hammerhead sharks and the appearance of other large
pelagic species such as giant pacific mantas, marlins, whale sharks
and schools of jacks. El Bajo is 35 miles from La Paz (2-3 hrs boat
ride each way), is an advanced dive exposed to strong currents. In
the late fall and winter, rough seas can occur.
Los
Islotes (Sea lion colony)
These
islets north of Espiritu Santo Island are 27 miles from La Paz (1.5
to 2 hrs. boat ride each way). They offer habitat to over a hundred
friendly California sea lions and numerous reef fishes. It is a well
protected area from the winds and considered an easy to moderate
dive spot.

Shallow
granite rock reef with abundant sea life attached to it. Easy dive.
Average depth 30ft.
Swaine
Rock
Granite
rock and hard coral reef approximately 3/4 mile in length. Soft and
hard corals are abundant. Nursery ground for various species of
fish, such as sierra mackerel, anchovies and yellowtail. Marine
invertebrates and reef fishes are also diverse. Easy to moderate
dive due to occasional strong currents. Average depth 30 ft.
Salvatierra
(The Shipwreck)
A ferry
boat that sunk in 1975 and is lying on the sandy bottom of San
Lorenzo canal. Its 300ft. hull, covered with soft corals and
mollusks, offers protection to many reef fishes and groupers.
Currents tend to be strong. A moderate to advance dive site. Average
depth 60ft.
La
Reina
An islet
with a lighthouse at the northern part of Cerralvo Island (the most
southern island in the Sea of Cortez). The diversity of reef and
tropical fishes is greater than in any other island in the Sea of
Cortez. Pelagic species are also abundant, i.e. green jacks, Mexican
barracuda, strong fish and a small community of sea lions resides in
the islet. This spot has several dive sites ranging from deep water
reefs to remnants of sunken ships. Easy to advance dive site
depending on currents. Average depth 60ft.
La
Reinita
An islet
and reef at the western central part of Cerralvo Island. Crevices,
boulders and caves provide shelter for snappers, big groupers,
lobster and mollusks. In this area, marlins and dorado are often
seen. Easy to moderate dive. Average depth is 50 ft.
Punta
Lobos
Rocky point
of eastern side of Espiritu Santo Island. Rocky slope ends on sandy
bottom. Different kinds of fishes swim by the slope occasionally
such as dense schools of mobula manta ray. Easy dive. Depths range
30 to 100 ft.
Pailebot
Northeast of Espiritu Santo Island dive
point. Boulders and crevices are habitat to very large groupers. Reef
fishes in the shallow area are abundant. Easy dive all year round. Depth
ranges from 30 to 100 ft.
